Residence Permit

Stays exceeding 180 days require a residence permit. Apply at the local Entry-Exit Administration Bureau with your work or student visa. Required: passport, visa, lease contract, landlord’s ID copy, recent photos. Processing: 7–15 business days; fee: ¥400.

Daily Living Costs

In Tier 1 cities (Beijing/Shanghai), a one-bedroom apartment rents for ¥4,000–8,000/month; Tier 2 cities (Chengdu/Wuhan) ¥2,000–4,000. Supermarket prices are comparable to Europe/US; restaurant meals are significantly cheaper — ¥30–80 per person for good Chinese food.

Healthcare & Insurance

Public hospitals are affordable but have long waits; international hospitals offer better service at higher cost (¥500–1,500 per outpatient visit). International health insurance covering China is recommended — annual premiums ¥5,000–15,000, covering hospitalization and emergency evacuation.
