China Festival Calendar: Best Events by Month
All 12 months offer festivals worth attending. This calendar helps you plan year-round travel.
January - March
Spring Festival — China’s biggest holiday. Temple fairs, lantern shows, dragon/lion dances. Dates vary (Lunar New Year), usually late January to mid-February.
Harbin Ice and Snow World — running through late February. Giant ice sculptures lit with colorful lights at night, dreamlike as a fairy tale. -20 to -30°C; dress warm.
Wuyuan rapeseed flowers (Jiangxi) and Nyingchi peach blossoms (Tibet) are March’s two most stunning landscapes.
April - June
Qingming spring outings after tomb sweeping. Park flower exhibitions everywhere, especially the Luoyang Peony Festival (mid-April).

Dragon Boat Festival — dragon boat races and zongzi. Miluo River (Hunan), Qu Yuan’s homeland, has the most authentic races.
Guizhou Miao Sisters’ Festival features ceremonial parades and “sisters’ rice.” Qinghai Lake cycling season begins in June.
July - September
Naadam on Inner Mongolia grasslands — racing, wrestling, archery. July is also the golden period for Tibet travel.
Qingdao Beer Festival by the sea + Yi Torch Festival with thousands carrying torches.
Mid-Autumn moon gazing and mooncakes. Wuyuan Huangling’s “autumn drying” (chili and corn on rooftops) is autumn’s most photogenic scene.
October - December
Golden Week national travel peak. Escape crowds at Ejina (Inner Mongolia) for golden poplar forests.
Tengchong Ginkgo Village (Yunnan) blanketed in gold; Wuyuan Shicheng’s red maples in morning mist are ethereal.
Harbin ice season opens; escape to warm Xishuangbanna in the south.
Tips: Chinese public holidays (Spring Festival, Qingming, May Day, Dragon Boat, Mid-Autumn, National Day) mean packed attractions and inflated prices. Off-peak travel is 10x better.
