Plugs & voltage

220V / 50Hz Phone, laptop and camera chargers are usually wide-range (100–240V) and work fine; check labels on high-power devices like hair dryers.
Mixed socket types A / C / I Hotels mix flat two-pin (type A) and three-pin (C/I) sockets — a universal travel adapter is the easiest fix.
What to bring Universal adapter ×1, a small power strip ×1 (charge several devices), a converter for high-power appliances if needed.
Drinking water Don't drink tap water; hotel rooms usually have a kettle, and bottled water costs ¥2–5 everywhere.

Best season at a glance

Best months per region: green = bestyellow = okayred = avoid

Best time Tolerable Hot/freezing/crowded — avoid
📌 Try to avoid the May Day (early May) and National Day (early Oct) golden weeks: huge crowds and doubled hotel prices. Around Chinese New Year the north is freezing — but that's Harbin Ice Festival season.

Payments & connectivity

💳 Alipay / WeChat Pay China is nearly cashless. Both apps accept foreign Visa/Mastercard — download, register and link your card before departure (~10 min), then just scan QR codes.
💵 Cash & ATMs Bring a little cash. ATMs at Bank of China, ICBC and CCB usually accept foreign cards; airport counters are the most reliable.
📶 Getting online Short trips: a travel eSIM installed before departure. Staying 2+ weeks: a local SIM (passport registration required). If you need blocked services, set up and test a VPN before you fly.
🚕 Must-have apps Didi for rides (international version takes foreign cards); Amap for maps (English mode); a translation app with offline packs; Trip.com for trains/flights (English + foreign cards), or the official 12306.
