Tang Suit: Where Tradition Meets Fashion

Despite the name, the Tang Suit isn’t from the Tang Dynasty — it’s a modern Chinese garment blending Manchu jacket elements with Western tailoring, characterized by knotted buttons and a symmetrical front opening.

Origins of the Tang Suit

The name comes from “Chinatown” (唐人街, literally “Tang People Street”). At the 2001 Shanghai APEC summit, world leaders posed in Chinese-style symmetrical jackets, which were then widely dubbed “Tang Suits” and became popular domestically and abroad.

Tang Suit: Modern Traditional Wear

Characteristics

Knotted buttons — handwoven fabric fasteners serving both functional and decorative purposes. Common styles include straight, pipa, and butterfly knots. Symmetrical front opening — unlike Hanfu’s cross-collar right-lapel design. Fabrics — traditionally brocade satin; modern versions also use cotton-linen blends. Red, gold, and navy are the most classic colors.

When to Wear

Tang Suits are most common during Spring Festival — grandparents in red Tang Suits for family photos is a shared Chinese memory. Modern updated versions exist for everyday wear. Foreign visitors buying a Tang Suit jacket as a travel souvenir get something both practical and distinctly Chinese.

Tips: Tang Suits are best custom-fitted — ready-made versions tend to run loose. Tailored fits look much better. Silk brocade fabric gives the richest texture.
