RMB Basics
The Renminbi (CNY/RMB) is China’s legal currency, symbol ¥. The 5th series (2019 edition) banknotes: ¥100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 1; coins: ¥1, ¥0.5, ¥0.1. ¥1 = 10 jiao = 100 fen. The ¥100 note features Mao Zedong on the front and the Great Hall of the People on the back — the most commonly used large denomination.
Mobile Payment
Alipay and WeChat Pay cover 99% of payment scenarios in China. Foreign visitors can link Visa/Mastercard/JCB credit cards without a Chinese bank account. Single transaction limit ~¥6,000, monthly cumulative ~¥50,000. Install both apps — some merchants only accept one.
