Before You Go
Confirm your ticket details: train number (e.g. G1), full departure station name, departure time, carriage and seat number. Arrive 30 minutes early; for major hubs (Beijing South, Shanghai Hongqiao) allow 45 minutes. Download the 12306 app or screenshot your e-ticket for offline access.
Station Entry Process
- Find the correct waiting hall entrance (organized by train number)
- Security: bags through X-ray, walk through metal detector
- Ticket check: swipe passport or scan QR code at automatic gate
- Find your waiting area (screens show boarding time)
- When boarding opens (usually 15 min before departure), swipe passport/ticket to access platform

On Board
Seat format: carriage + letter + number, e.g. “Car 05, Seat 08A”. The dining car is usually in the middle of the train, serving boxed meals, instant noodles, and drinks. Smoking is prohibited throughout (including toilets). Signal may drop briefly in tunnels through mountainous areas.

Arriving
Prepare your luggage 5 minutes before arrival. Listen for bilingual (Chinese/English) announcements. Exit by swiping passport or ticket; follow “出站/Exit” signs. Major stations connect directly to the metro — follow signs after exiting.
