The Great Wall has hundreds of climbable sections, but 95% of visitors only know Badaling. Choosing the right section makes all the difference.

Highlight: The ridge between Towers 14–23, flanked by dense forest — ablaze with autumn colors in October.

75 km from central Beijing, about 1.5 hours by car. Well-restored walls with far fewer visitors than Badaling. Cable car up, toboggan slide down — accessible even if you’re not super fit. The ridge between Towers 14–23 is the highlight, especially in autumn when the hills turn red.

The Ancient Wonder: Great Wall of China

A photographer’s paradise. The Wall emerging from morning mist is postcard-perfect. A 3-hour hike connects to Simatai with dense watchtowers along the way. You might have entire stretches to yourself.

The easiest to reach (S2 train, ¥6 ticket) with the best facilities, but also the most crowded. Fine for a half-day visit or with elderly/children. The north section is steeper but less packed.

The only Great Wall section open for night visits. Walls lit up against the dark sky, combined with the nightscape of Gubei Water Town below — genuinely atmospheric. Advance booking required.

Unrestored “wild wall” — steep, crumbling, only for experienced hikers. The “Eagle Flies Facing Upward” section is nearly vertical. No safety facilities whatsoever; you climb at your own risk.

Footwear matters more than anything — sneakers minimum, hiking boots preferred. Steps are uneven and steeper than photos suggest. Bring at least 1.5L of water (vendors on the wall charge ¥10–15 per bottle). Sunscreen and a hat are essential — zero shade on the wall. In winter, bring gloves — the metal handrails are freezing.

  • Spring (Apr–May): Comfortable temps, wildflowers blooming
  • Autumn (Sep–Oct): Peak foliage, best photography
  • Summer: Brutally hot with zero shade, but sunrises are stunning (requires pre-dawn departure)
  • Winter: Snow-covered Wall is dramatic, but icy paths are dangerous; some sections close

Best seasons: Spring (April–May) for comfortable temperatures and wildflowers. Autumn (September–October) for foliage and photography. Summer is brutally hot with no shade. Winter snow makes for dramatic photos but icy paths — some sections close entirely.
