Silk Road: Echoes Across the Desert

Starting from Xi’an and heading west to Dunhuang — even extending to Kashgar in Xinjiang — the Silk Road’s appeal lies not in any single attraction, but in the cumulative weight of atmosphere.

Standing before the Mogao Caves, you realize that painters worked here stroke by stroke over a thousand years ago, not knowing if anyone would ever come to see. Zhangye’s Rainbow Mountains look like someone spilled a paint palette across the hills. The sand at Mingsha Mountain is impossibly fine — climb it at dusk and you’ll see Crescent Lake catching the last light of the sun.

Sichuan-Tibet Highway: China’s Most Scenic Road

G318 runs 2,150km from Chengdu to Lhasa. What makes it extraordinary is the violent change in altitude — starting at 500m in Chengdu, crossing passes like Zheduo and Que’er, reaching over 5,000m at the highest points.

Xinduqiao is called “photographer’s paradise” — autumn golden poplars reflected against snow peaks make it impossible to keep driving. Ranwu Lake is an unreal blue-green. Midui Glacier is one of China’s lowest-altitude glaciers. Every March, Nyingchi’s peach blossom festival turns entire valleys pink.

Yunnan: 25 Ethnic Cultures in One Province

Yunnan is home to 25 ethnic minorities — more than any other Chinese province. From Kunming’s Stone Forest to Dali’s Erhai Lake, from Naxi music in Lijiang’s old town to Tibetan monasteries in Shangri-La, to tropical rainforests and the Dai Water Splashing Festival in Xishuangbanna — the range feels like crossing multiple countries.

Lijiang’s old town gets noisy at night, but at 6am Sifang Square is nearly empty and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain glows in the early light. Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the world’s deepest canyons — your legs will ache after a day’s hike, but it’s worth every step.

Tibet: Redefining What “Far” Means

Most people think they’re prepared for Tibet. They’re not — not because of altitude sickness, but because the scale of emptiness and silence exceeds anything they imagined.

The Potala Palace has 384 steps — climb them and look back at Lhasa, and you’ll feel like you’re standing in another century. Namtso Lake sits at 4,718m; its color shifts from deep blue to turquoise depending on the weather. Everest Base Camp’s tent zone is at 5,200m — on clear days you can see the summit, but more often it’s wrapped in cloud.

Guilin: The Landscape on the Back of a 20 RMB Note

The stretch of the Li River near Xingping village is the exact scene on the back of China’s 20 RMB note. Stand at the right angle and you’ll see karst peaks reflected in the water, a bamboo raft drifting through — nearly identical to the banknote image.

The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo covers 83km and takes most of a day by bamboo raft. The Yulong River near Yangshuo is quieter — rent a raft and drift at your own pace. Longji Rice Terraces mirror the sky in spring when flooded, turn gold at harvest in autumn, with Zhuang and Yao villages perched along the terraced slopes.

Ancient Capitals: Four Cities, Five Millennia

Beijing, Xi’an, Luoyang, Nanjing — together these four cities span the most significant dynasties in Chinese history.

Beijing’s Forbidden City is the world’s best-preserved wooden palace complex — 798 rooms, impossible to cover in a day. Xi’an’s Terracotta Warriors are Qin Shi Huang’s underground army; no two faces are alike. Luoyang’s Longmen Grottoes were carved during the Northern Wei dynasty; the largest Vairocana Buddha stands 17.14m tall, its face said to be modeled on Empress Wu Zetian. Nanjing’s Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum climbs Purple Mountain via 392 steps — reach the top and the whole city spreads below you.

Hainan: China’s Only Tropical Island

Hainan sits between 18–20°N latitude with an average annual temperature of 24°C. Sanya’s Yalong Bay has visibility exceeding 10 meters — ideal for snorkeling and diving. Wuzhizhou Island is one of China’s best dive sites, with well-preserved coral reefs.

But Hainan is more than Sanya. Wenchang has the densest coconut groves in China. Haikou’s arcade-style old streets preserve Nanyang architectural heritage. Wanning’s surf breaks rank among the best in the country. The Tropical Rainforest National Park in the island’s interior contains China’s most intact primary tropical forest.

Western Sichuan: What Photographers Don’t Want You to Know

Western Sichuan’s plateau was once a “secret” among Chinese photographers — it’s less secret now. Daocheng Yading’s three sacred peaks — Chenresig, Jambeyang, and Chanadorje — form a triangle, with Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake at their feet, their colors genuinely resembling milk and a rainbow.

Larung Gar Buddhist Academy in Sertar is one of the world’s largest Tibetan Buddhist institutes — the dense red cabins covering the hillside look like a painting from above. Danba’s Tibetan watchtower villages are scattered across the valley; in autumn, golden poplars light up the entire landscape.

Jiangnan: Heaven Above, Suzhou and Hangzhou Below

This saying dates to the Song dynasty and still holds. Suzhou’s Humble Administrator’s Garden is China’s largest private garden — rockeries, ponds, and pavilions packed into 4 hectares, a new composition every few steps. West Lake’s “Broken Bridge in Snow” is a winter scene, but the peach blossoms along Su Causeway in spring and lotus flowers in summer each have their own perfection.

Wuzhen’s water streets are most beautiful after dark when the lights come on and the crowds thin — black-canopied boats drift slowly, white walls and dark roof tiles reflected in the canal. Nanxun is quieter than Wuzhen, with more of the texture of real daily life still intact.

Northeast China: A Fairy Tale at -30°C

Harbin’s Ice and Snow World opens every December, built from blocks of ice cut from the Songhua River. At its largest it covers 800,000 square meters — castles, slides, ice sculptures — and after dark it glows like an illuminated city.

China Snow Town near Mudanjiang receives over 2 meters of snow annually — rooftop drifts pile a meter thick in mushroom shapes. Changbai Mountain’s Heaven Lake is a volcanic crater lake on the China-North Korea border, frozen in winter and deep blue in summer. Jilin’s Rime Island fog freezes on tree branches as Songhua River vapor meets cold air; peak season is January, when entire forests look like white coral.

How to Choose Your Route

One conclusion: China is too vast to skim. Pick one route, go deep — it’s worth more than ten cities seen in passing.
