China is one of the world’s safer tourist destinations — violent crime rates are low and the risk of physical harm to visitors is minimal. Main risks are pickpocketing (crowded areas), tourist scams (tea house scam, art student scam), and traffic accidents.

Common Scams

Tea house scam: Strangers invite you to a “traditional tea ceremony” — the bill ends up hundreds to thousands of yuan. Art student scam: Claim to be art school students, invite you to an exhibition, then pressure you to buy overpriced paintings. Taxi overcharging: Refusing to use the meter or taking long routes — insist on the meter or use DiDi.
