August is peak beach season in China — and the time when choosing wisely matters most. Famous beaches are packed, but lesser-known gems sit nearly empty. This guide helps you skip the crowds and find the coast actually worth visiting.

Guangdong: Hailing Island, Yangjiang

Shanghainese go to Sanya; Guangzhou locals go to Hailing Island. Just 3 hours from Guangzhou, this island has one of South China’s best beaches — Ten-Mile Silver Beach. Fine white sand, clear water, and half the price of Sanya.

Ten-Mile Silver Beach About 9km long, divided into sections. The westernmost section has the fewest people and cleanest sand. August water temperature ~28°C — perfect for swimming.

Dajiao Bay A surfing spot with August waves of 1-1.5m — ideal for beginners. Surf lessons ~¥200/2 hours including instructor and equipment.

Getting There: Guangzhou South Station → Yangjiang Station by bullet train (~1 hour, ~¥80), then taxi to the island (~40 min, ~¥80).

Zhejiang: Zhoushan Archipelago

Zhoushan is Shanghai’s backyard — just 2 hours by ferry. But Zhoushan isn’t one island — it’s an archipelago of 1,390 islands, each with a completely different character.

Zhujia Tip Best beach quality — Nansha and Dongsha are the main beaches. Crowded in August; go on weekdays. Ferry from Shanghai Nanhui ~2 hours.

Shengsi Islands More niche, quieter. Jihu Beach has golden sand — a completely different look from southern white beaches. Many fishing family restaurants; evening seafood is very affordable (¥50-80/person, ~$7-11).

Peach Blossom Island Home of Huang Rong in Jin Yong’s novel “The Legend of the Condor Heroes.” There’s a wuxia theme park, but the real gem is the undeveloped wild beach on the island’s south side — no development, no tickets, just rocks and waves.

Fujian: Pingtan Island

Pingtan is China’s closest point to Taiwan (just 68 nautical miles) and one of the hottest emerging island destinations. It’s home to China’s rare “blue tears” phenomenon and unique stone houses (traditional homes built entirely from stone).

Blue Tears From April to September, Pingtan’s shores glow blue at night — bioluminescent plankton called noctiluca. August is peak season, but you need a clear, moonless night to see it.

August Beach Practical Tips

Sun Protection Is Priority One: South China’s August UV index typically reaches 11 (extreme). Reapply SPF50+ sunscreen every 2 hours; hat and UV-protective clothing are essential.

Typhoon Season Warning: August is peak typhoon season. Check forecasts before departure and monitor typhoon tracks. If your destination issues a typhoon warning, rebook immediately — safety first.

Book Hotels Early: August is peak season — good hotels on popular islands book out a month ahead. Prices are 50-100% higher than off-season.
