Using WeChat Pay and Alipay Together
The safest payment strategy isn’t picking one — it’s running two wallets: one for daily use, one as backup.
Why This Matters to You
Different merchants have different payment preferences. You’ll run into inconsistencies at street stalls, scenic spots, and chain stores — having two wallets significantly reduces the awkwardness of a failed payment. More importantly, when one app goes down temporarily (server maintenance, card binding issues, verification code delays), the other picks up instantly.
Recommended Setup

- Primary Wallet: the one you use most and trust most (decide within 24 hours of arrival)
- Backup Wallet: keep it logged in and payment-ready; you don’t need it daily, but it must be switchable at any moment
For most tourists, WeChat Pay works better as the primary wallet — it’s more deeply integrated into everyday commerce, from street food stalls to convenience stores. Alipay is the better backup because it covers official services (hospitals, government platforms, some national park ticketing) that WeChat Pay occasionally misses.
Setup Steps
- Complete real-name verification and card binding on both apps
- Make a small test payment on each to confirm they work
- Set your primary wallet’s payment code as a phone shortcut (accessible from lock screen)
- Keep the backup wallet logged in — open it every 2–3 days to prevent auto-logout

When You Need Alipay
- Some national scenic area official ticketing (e.g. Huangshan, Jiuzhaigou)
- Hospital registration and payment
- Train ticket refund fee payment
- Some government services (visa extension, residence permit related)

These aren’t common tourist scenarios, but if you’re staying longer than two weeks or venturing beyond major cities, you’ll likely encounter at least one of them. Having Alipay ready means you won’t be turned away.
When WeChat Pay Works Better
- Restaurants, cafés, convenience stores
- Didi ride-hailing (deeply integrated with WeChat account)
- Peer-to-peer transfers (splitting bills with friends)
- WeChat Mini Program purchases (food delivery, bike sharing)
WeChat Pay’s biggest advantage is its integration with WeChat itself — if you’re already using WeChat to communicate (which most visitors do), your payment history, receipts, and merchant contacts are all in one place.
Balance Management Tips
Don’t keep too much in either app’s balance (WeChat “Change” / Alipay “Yu’e Bao”). Top up only what you need. Before leaving China:
- WeChat “Change” withdrawal to linked bank card (0.1% fee, minimum ¥1)
- Alipay balance withdrawal is free up to ¥20,000 per year
Don’t leave significant balances in either app when you depart. Withdrawal to a foreign card works but takes 1–3 business days and may incur small fees.
Bottom Line
Two wallets isn’t a hassle — it’s insurance. Set it up once, benefit the entire trip. Your primary handles speed; your backup handles surprises.
